Toshiba G450: Mobile phone, Mp3 player, HSDPA USB modem

November 19, 08 by admin

What looks like a concept phone is actually a working device that’s commercially available in Europe. The Toshiba G450 is a cellphone, MP3 player and HSDPA USB modem all rolled into one uniquely designed mobile device.

Granted that almost any HSDPA-capable mobile phone can do any of the above, Toshiba gives the modern mobile phone their own spin which, suffice to say, is definitely one of the more peculiar looking products we’ve seen in a while. Based on a review done by IntoMobile, it pretty much does what it’s supposed to though the limited 160MB storage leaves room for improvement.

With a £140 price tag and a design that definitely goes against the grain of what we’ve grown accustomed to when dealing with mobile phones, I highly doubt that the Toshiba G450 will make a significant impact in the mobile phone industry. But that’s just me, how about you guys? Would you consider getting yourself the Toshiba G450 if it became available in your neck of the woods?

Rogers Officially Announces Nokia E71

November 19, 08 by admin

Rogers has officially announced that the Nokia E71 will be available soon. It was previously reported that it would beavailable via Fido, but I guess that idea was ditched as part of Fido’s re-branding and re-positioning in the marketplace.

The E71 has been out for quite sometime now and has received various accolades thanks to its superb design and excellent performance. It has even earned the title of being the best E-series phone to date. It’s about time the Nokia E71 found its way to the Canadian market.

Here’s the official statement coming from Rogers:

“Rogers Wireless and Nokia announce today that the highly anticipated Nokia E71 smartphone will be coming soon to Canada. Featuring a sleek stainless steel design with a full QWERTY keyboard, the Nokia E71 will be the thinnest smartphone in Rogers’ extensive lineup of innovative mobile devices.”

Unfortunately pricing and availability is still unknown. Considering that the more affordable toned-down Nokia E63 has already been announced to follow in its steps, I’m hoping that the Nokia E71 will make a Canadian debut before 2008 comes to a close.

iPhone Google Mobile app now supports Voice-recognition, Search with my Location

November 19, 08 by admin

Google has just released an update to the Google Mobile app for the iPhone which now includes voice recognition. No need to type in search terms anymore. All you’ll have to do is speak into the iPhone’s mouthpiece and tell the app what you want to find via Google and presto! A type-free search is done!

It’s now available for download at the App Store, but while the app can be installed on both the iPhone and iPod Touch, the voice-recognition support only works on the iPhone due to the lack of a mic on the iPod Touch. This new version of Google Mobile likewise comes with Search with a My Location feature which allows you to conduct local searches based on your present location. You must enable Location services on your iPhone first to take advantage of this feature.

Here’s a short video demonstrating what the new features are in this latest iteration of Google Mobile.

Give it a try and tell us what you think? Personally, I’m not a huge fan of voice-recognition services, but if this is anywhere near what is being portrayed in the movies, then Google might have a winner here.

Incase Power Slide: Protective case, Extended Battery Pack for the 3G iPhone

November 19, 08 by admin

External battery packs for the iPhone aren’t exactly the most flattering accessories, but we’ve found something that will probably make you change your mind.

The Incase Power Slide is a protective case and battery pack all rolled into one stylishly designed product for the iPhone 3G. It also comes with a custom USB cable so you can charge and sync without having to remove the iPhone from the Power Slide. It comes with 1330mAh 4.2V rechargeable battery that provides up to 330 hours of standby time, 5-10 hours of talk time and internet usage of up to 6 hours on 3G/WiFi giving you more time to enjoy your iPhone while on the road. There’s a LED battery status indicator at the back that shows you how much juice is left on the Power Slide so you recharge it accordingly.

If you’re an avid user of the iPhone and find yourself on the road most of the time, this is one accessory we’ll gladly recommend for your cell phone buying this holiday season. No word yet on pricing a release date of November 28th has been scheduled.

Nokia 2680 Slide Confirmed on Rogers PAYG

November 19, 08 by admin

If you’re not looking into a QWERTY-enabled, high-end phone this holiday season, you might want to check out the Nokia 2680 slide. We’ve received reports that this phone is now available in Rogers stores, a rumor which we’ve now confirmed. The Nokia 2680 is indeed available on Rogers as part of their Pay-As-You-Go offering.

The Nokia 2680 Slide features a VGA camera, FM radio, Bluetooth, and GPRS/EDGE connectivity. Sure, it doesn’t come with some of the more modern amenities such as 3G connectivity, a megapixel camera and touchscreen display, but it does provide you with the most basic features, some entertainment capabilities and best of all, an easy to swallow price tag of $89.99 with a Bluetooth headset.

Interested? Unfortunately Rogers doesn’t have this one up on their site yet, but you should be able to find it at your local Rogers dealer.

Thanks Matthew

MCleaner app: Filter SMS, Calls Received on your Phone

November 19, 08 by admin

Spam is a nuisance that is no longer limited to just e-mail. Unfortunately, it has also entered the realm of SMS on the mobile phone. Since phones aren’t really built to filter out messages like e-mail clients do with incoming mail, you’ve got to have a 3rd party app installed that will do the job for you if you’re a frequent recipient of unsolicited spam SMS. This is where MCleaner comes in.

It’s a simple mobile phone app that basically filters your incoming short messages / calls and relegates those that are coming from unknown individuals (read: not in your contact list/address book) to a quarantine folder for later review. It’s fully customizable so you can tailor-fit its settings according to your needs. There’s a version available to work for a variety of mobile operating systems such as S60, UIQ, Linux, mobile Mac OS/iPhone and Windows Mobile which basically covers almost the entire mobile phone playing field.

Based on the review done by Unwiredview, it pretty much does what it’s supposed to albeit needing a little tweaking here and there. It’s free to try out for 15 days, but you’ll need to cough up $11.99 to get the full version. It would have been better if it was completely free, but hey, if it gets the job done, then I’m sure you wouldn’t mind paying the reasonable price for it.

Asus P565 phone pops up on Asus website

November 19, 08 by admin

Asus has officially announced the P565 by discreetly posting it on their website.

The specs are still the same from what was previewed a while back: 800MHz processor, 2.8-inch touchscreen, 3-megapixel camera, GPS, and Windows Mobile 6.1 OS. What we now know is that it also features WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, 256MB flash memory, 128MB DDR SDRAM and a microSD card slot with SDHC support for added storage. It also features the Asus’ Glide UI which is their customized interface designed to work on top of Windows Mobile 6.1.

Still no word on pricing or availability, but considering that it’s now appearing on their website, we should probably see an official launch soon.

HTC announces WiMAX-flavored Max 4G

November 19, 08 by admin

We already mentioned the existence of a WiMax-enabled device from HTC earlier last month, and now, HTC has officially announced it to the rest of the world.

The HTC Max 4G/Scarlet (formerly known as simply the T8290) comes with the same kick-ass 3.8-inch 800×480 touchscreen display found on the Touch HD and has a 5-megapixel autofocus camera as well as a secondary front camera for video calls. You’ll also get WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS as part of the package. Unfortunately, you can add this one under the ever growing list of devices that will never see the light of day in the US or Canada. Like the Touch HD, HTC has confirmed the Max 4G will debut in Russia on November 26th and there are no plans for the North American market.

Here’s a short video of the Max 4G showing off its features.

HTC Touch Pro now Official on Bell

November 19, 08 by admin

The much awaited HTC Touch Pro is finally available through Bell.

This QWERTY-enabled twin of the Touch Diamond can be had for as little as $239.95 on a 3-yr contract. If you prefer a shorter term, you can get the Pro for $449.95 on a 2-yr contract, $549.95 for a single year and $599.95 if you want to completely ditch the whole contract thing. For those who might have forgotten already what features the Touch Pro boasts, it has a 2.8-inch 640×480 VGA display, 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus and flash, GPS, TouchFLO 3D, accelerometer, and of course, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

If HTC isn’t your cup of tea, you might want to wait for Bell to release the BlackBerry Storm which we’re guessing should debut just in time for the holiday shopping rush.
