If the newly released iPhone 3G unlock isn’t working out for you, the iPhone Dev Team has released a new version that might put an end to all your unlocking woes.

Yellowsnow 0.9.4 Beta is out now which addresses some complaints that have trickled in upon the release of the group’s first iPhone 3G unlock. By default, it’s now always in quick mode unless you enable the –l option for long mode. PIN support still isn’t quite there yet, but given how fast they were able to come out with this new iteration of Yellowsnow, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if PIN support would become available within the month.
If this new iPhone 3G unlock still doesn’t work on your end, send your complaints to the iPhone Dev Team here so that they can include an appropriate fix in their next release.

While we have yet to hear an official announcement from Sony Ericsson as to how much and when it will be released, the upcoming C510 aka Kate Cybershot phone gets showcased in these new leaked shots from Daily Mobile.

This is, by far, the clearest and most detailed pictures we’ve seen of the upcoming Sony Ericsson C510 Cybershot phone, and I must admit, it does look like a beauty. The SE C510 comes with a 2.2-inch QVGA display, 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus, face detection, smile shutter, LED flash, direct blog shortcut, quick access to YouTube, and 160MB of internal memory.

Confirming prior reports, it looks like it will be released in February, but as usual, nothing’s certain until we see the C510 in the shops or we get an announcement straight from Sony Ericsson’s mouth.

Hardcore loving laptop
Let’s get something out of the way before we look at the hardware: we weren’t actually able to test the GETAC in all the hostile environments you might want it to perform in, unless you count a frosty morning in the Surrey countryside. But much of what the V100 has to offer applies wherever you are.

Easter Eggs in computer software isn’t exactly something new to the public, but an Easter Egg in an iPhone app is something you’d rarely chance upon. That’s what the Google Mobile app with Voice Search for the iPhone comes with; a hidden feature not many are aware of until now.

The Bells and Whistles option can be found if you continuously slide upwards until you get past the About option which is usually the last item in the Settings page. It’s actually just a set of enhancement features that allows you to change the color scheme and sound alerts as well as a bunch of other stuff that the Google Mobile team did not mention so as to not to spoil the surprise.
So if you’ve got nothing better to do and have the Google Mobile app with Voice Search already installed on your iPhone, then why not give this Easter Egg a try to give your app a new look and feel for the new year.

Aside from making calls and surfing the internet, you can now also use the T-Mobile G1 as an external keyboard and mouse that you can pair up with your laptop thanks to the RemoteDroid app.

We’re not quite sure who in their right mind would trade-in the easy-to-use keyboard of their laptop for the smaller G1 keypad, but the mouse option looks quite useful especially for a netbook. You can use either the trackball of the G1 or the entire touchscreen complete with virtual left and right buttons as your input method of choice.
Here’s a video below showing off the RemoteDroid app in action:
The RemoteAndroid app for the G1 can be downloaded from the Google Marketplace, while the corresponding app which you’ll need to install on your Windows/Mac/Linux-based computer can be found at their website. Unfortunately, since the G1 or Android phone is hardly available anywhere else except the US for the time being, I doubt that this bit of news will be of interest to the majority.

It looks like Meizu is planning to make a mark in the mobile phone industry in 2009 as they’ve opened a flagship store in Shenzhen, China. Upon opening, the store managed to sell out all of their available Meizu M8 phones and is now only accepting reservations.

They’ve also launched an English counterpart of their website for the international community who are interested in learning more about their products.

No word yet if they’ll be opening a flagship store elsewhere or when the Meizu M8 will be released internationally, but if the rest of the world gives the M8 the same reception as the Chinese people did, then I have no doubt that 2009 will be a successful year for the company.

The iPhone Dev Team has kept their promise and has finally released the highly anticipated iPhone 3G unlock. They do note, however, that this is still just a beta version, 0.9.1 to be exact, so expect a few bumps along the way.

Here are some important quotes from their blog regarding this latest release:
BASICS
- The unlock works exclusively with baseband 02.28.00. This baseband is provided by the latest firmware update (2.2) from Apple. You’ll need to upgrade to this release using iTunes and then use QuickPwn to activate etc. There are plenty of tutorials about this on iclarified, bigboss, and other established tutorial sites. Because it works on 02.28.00, it is available to everyone on the planet. This means we don’t need to unnecessarily expose holes in earlier basebands, which is an important concern.
- The application is a small daemon that is launched on boot. It injects the payload at boot and also whenever there is a baseband reset. You won’t notice anything about it other than that your third-party sim now works. It’s a small program and unobtrusive. There is no GUI (this is by design).
- yellowsn0w is completely removable through Cydia, the command line, and iTunes.
DETAILS
- There is a known issue with SIM cards that have STK (SIM Toolkit) application menus. These menus are usually items such as “top up” “get credit” “lotto numbers” etc. These menu items confuse the application sometimes. Removing and reinserting the SIM once after reboot (give it about 60 seconds (with v0.9.1) after you see the slide to unlock widget) fixes this issue. We’re working on a better fix.
- For those of you using SIM cards without STK menus, the application has some optional arguments that will make the unlock much faster for you. So either experiment on your own (use “yellowsn0w -h” for usage) or wait for a customization writeup.
- After you install yellowsn0w via Cydia, you should return to the Cydia main menu then reboot your iPhone with the 3rd party SIM installed. Wait for the slide to unlock screen, then wait 10 or 15 secs more. If you don’t see your carrier name pop up, then remove your SIM, reinsert it, and wait 10 secs more. This is the step we’ll be working on eliminating next.
RANDOM
- The application is version 0.9.1. This is considered beta software, you use it at your own risk. You know the score.
- The application is released on a non-commerical basis. Please do not accept pirates and scummy ripoffs of this software. We license this software for single use and in a non-commerical environment (meaning you can’t charge for it). The techniques and methods used are not to be used by third party companies. We are watching you Jody…we won’t be so forgiving this time.
UPDATES
- If you are in the U.S. and are trying this with T-Mobile, you must turn off the 3G switch in Settings. Also if you are good with the command line, you can make it much easier by adding the line -q right after the /usr/bin/yellowsn0w line in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.iphone-dev.yellowsn0w.plist (that’s and advanced tip, hopefully someone will make a boosprefs type of tool for it)
- No PIN support yet. Remember how we said this was beta? Well we’re still working out the flow for SIMs with PINs enabled. Please disable any PIN you may have on that SIM before trying yellowsn0w, for now.
- The unlock will silently quit on anything other than baseband 02.28.00. It detects the wrong version and just quits to avoid any damage. Please double check your Modem Firmware setting in Settings->General->About.
As you can see, there are some limitations to this unlock app, but hey, it’s free anyway so who are we to argue? So if you’re ready to give the iPhone 3G unlock a go, you can find it at the following locations:
Cydia: http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com/
Installer: http://i.yellowsn0w.com/
Hope you enjoy guys, and don’t forget to hit us up in the comments section below. We’d love to hear your two cents (or more) about the iPhone 3G unlock from iPhone Dev Team.

As good as the iPhone’s Safari browser is, it still lacks some modest features found in its PC counterpart such as text-search capabilities.

But…thanks to Safari+, you can now have that same feature on your mobile Safari along with translation, speed-scrolling and image displaying. Safari+ is a collection of bookmarklets that utilize Javascript to enable these features to work with the built-in internet browser on the iPhone. No need to jailbreak or purchase any additional app from the App Store. Just head on over to http://www.ipuhelin.com/en/safariplus/ on your iPhone and install the features you want to add to your Apple mobile phone. It’s that easy!
With the Safari+ installed on your iPhone, you can now enjoy a near perfect internet browsing experience on the go.

Did you know that a mobile phone uses a small amount of minerals derived from clotan ore, and that coltan ore is mined, and with roughly a billion mobile phones sold worldwide annually that’s a great deal of mining.
Now that in itself may not mean anything to the mobile phone user, but when you consider the coltan mines are actually the habitat of an endangered gorilla it’s somewhat shocking to know.
There are 9 million mobile handsets sold in Australia annually and if all these handsets were recycled it would deliver $4.5 million towards gorilla conservation efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
I guess the moral here is recycling your old mobile handset as you never really know just how much help that can achieve.

Apparently according to a surgical research team, mobile phones are the latest harbour for hospital related superbugs as them team of experts have revealed bacteria thrives on mobile handsets.
The research team apparently revealed a startling image of colonies of bacteria frown from a working hospital doctor’s mobile phone; this photo was issued by a group of infection specialists who are investigating the spread of such superbugs as MSRA and C diff.
His new research was performed by Richard Brady of the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh, and was prompted by the increase in use of mobile phones by hospital staff and an apparent lack of guidance in how to clean the handsets.
